We Come Bearing Good News- The Usa F1 Visa Is Now Open!

F1 Visa:  The USA F1 student Visa is the type you should opt for as an international student (if you are someone who is accepted into an academic institution in the US as a full-time student that entails more than 18 hours of study). 
If anyone is accompanying you to the US like your parent, spouse or anyone else (probably not your pet rock), they will have to obtain the F2 visa.

J1 Visa: If you are pursuing a short-term study or exchange program in the US like a research fellowship or any vocational study then it is best to obtain a J1 student visa USA. Dependents of the J1 USA student visa holder must obtain a J2 visa.

M1 Visa: are you a person who has a knack for cooking and thinking about taking a cooking course? Do you want to take that cosmetology course that is always on your mind? Is your dream destination to take these classes in the US? Then you should obtain the M1 student Visa. The M1 student visa is a non-academic/ vocational student visa that allows Indian students to pursue vocational, technical classes.

F1 Visa Application Process:

The USA F1 Visa appointments are open from mid-July to mid-august, for more information the US embassy of India encourages all aspirants to Visit the Visa travel document page to familiarise themselves with the USA F1 visa application process and requirements.

Are you SVEP approved?: Make sure the institution you enrolled in is certified by Student and Exchange Visitor Program(SVEP). Certified by the SVEP means your institution is eligible to accept international foreign students. When you are accepted in one such US institution then you will be enrolled with the student and exchange visitor information system (SEVIS).

The three musketeers: To attain a USA F1 student Visa, you should definitely know about the three musketeers, I-901, I-20 and the Ds-160. After being enrolled in the SEVIS, students are required to pay the SEVIS I-901 fee which is about $350. This fee supports the system that ensures that international students maintain their status while studying in the US. 

After the payment, your institution will provide you with an I-20. With this I-20 form, you are now eligible to apply for the USA F1 Visa. The DS-160 is the F1 visa application form that contains all your relevant personal, academic, financial, and security information that ensures your purpose of the visit and that you are eligible to enter the USA. The DS-160 f1 USA visa application fee is $160 which also covers the Visa Interview for the USA F1 student Visa.

The Interview: Unless your are not younger than 13 or older than 80, you are required to schedule an appointment with Visa application centre(VAC) to get your photo and biometrics taken and attend an interview with the embassy to obtain a USA F1 Visa. Even the word ‘interview’ incites shivers to some people, But fret not, you got this! Just make sure you are prepared with all the necessary documents.

Required documents:

  • A passport that is valid upto 6 months beyond the intended stay in the USA
  • Filled out DS-160 and I-20 form 
  • Copy of your SEVIS payment confirmation receipt
  • Recent Passport photos that adhere to the photo requirements
  • Important academic transcripts, test scores and diplomas (if applicable)
  • Proof of finance showing sufficient funds for your stay in the US

The interview questions will focus on ensuring that you are a legitimate student and your purpose of visit, you have the sufficient funds to cover your stay and  regarding strong ties to your home country and incentives to go back.

You may be asked about the reasons to choose USA, or your particular Institiution over the ones in your home country and so on. Make sure to answer in a clear and concise manner.
